What if I’ve had bad experiences with doctors in the past?

I hear it time and time again in my practice: People have had really negative experiences with doctors and other medical professionals. Maybe they’ve been totally their very real problem is a figment of their imagination, or they’ve had treatment that made them uncomfortable, or it just wasn’t an environment where they felt like their worries were taken seriously. Maybe worst of all, some people have been shamed by their doctor or other medical professional, made to feel like they were abnormal or “less than” in some way.

Those stories break my heart, because that’s the opposite of what your experience should be. I will do everything in my power to make sure you never feel that way when you visit our clinic. From the second you walk through our doors - and see our beautiful mural! - know that you will be listened to and treated with respect, kindness *and* the latest physiotherapy techniques. You’re a whole person, and your mind and spirit are just as important to us as what’s going on in your body.

This is important to me for two reasons: I have a background in bioethics, and that made me very aware of the need for patients to feel like they have autonomy. You make the decisions, and you control what happens to your body - not some authority figure in a white coat. The second reason is a personal one: I have been where you are, a patient who desperately wanted to have a baby but couldn’t even have sex because it was too painful. I have been told “it’s all in your head,” and I know how being dismissed - and frankly, belittled - like that can make you feel.

That’s why if you have had bad experiences with medical professionals in the past, I want to extend a special invitation to you: You’re so welcome at Happy Down There, and we will take you seriously - and together, we’ll work toward a solution that’s right for YOU.
